Q: What do you notice about the temptation and lies Eve receives? And then Adam?
Q: What are the immediate implications of their actions? What do they do? How do they act?
Q: What do you see in the posture of God seeking out Adam and Eve?
Nurture
Q: In the aftermath of sin, we see several ramifications, long before any judgement can be issued. Which of these do you resonate with?
Shame: “I am bad”
Guilt: “I’ve done bad”
Hiding: “I don’t want to be seen”
Blame: “It can’t be my fault”
Q: God comes to them and asks three questions to draw them out. Think about a time you had shame, guilt, and were hiding and isolated from relationship, how do these questions draw you back?
Where are you? (A question not about location, but about their state)
Who told you? (A question about the lie they heard and believed)
Did you do this? (A question inviting confession and an end to hiding)
Act
But, Jesus doesn’t allow us to live in shame, guilt, and all the fruit of rebellion. Instead he pursues us, saves us, and takes on all the blame so we can be blameless.
Q: What would it look like for you to confess sin and taste repentance? What keeps you from repentance?
How does Thomas Watson’s description of the fruit of repentance inspire and encourage you to “come out of the bushes” and allow Christ to redeem you.
“Upon our turning to God, we have more restored to us in Christ—than ever was lost in Adam. God says to the repenting soul, “I will clothe you with the robe of righteousness; I will enrich you with the jewels and graces of my Spirit. I will bestow my love upon you! I will give you a kingdom! Son, all I have is yours!”
